embodying coaches’ competencies
Coache’s competencies are described by the professional associations, both ICF and EMCC.
However, once you’ve read and memorised them, how do you embody them in a discussion with a coachee, a client ?
How does anacrusis ritual works on your competencies?
Here are some ideas of how anacrusis might support your own embodiment of the 8 core competencies:
- ethical practice
- « Is sensitive to clients’ identity, environment, experiences, values and beliefs »
- 🧩 offering an anacrusis experience to the coachee, and support to make their own decision, with their values, beliefs, past or current experiences
- embodies a coach mindset
- « Mentally and emotionally prepares for sessions »
- 🧩 using one card for yourself before a session
- establishes and maintains agreements
- « Partners with the client to manage the time and focus of the session »
- 🧩 introducing the cards: what are they designed for, why are you offering to use them, and how…
- cultivates trust and safety
- « Demonstrates openness and transparency as a way to display vulnerability and build trust with the client »
- 🧩 picking randomly a card
- maintains presence
- « Is comfortable working in a space of not knowing »
- 🧩 offering an anacrusis experience to the coachee, and being OK with their answer, whatever it might be
- listen actively
- « Notices, acknowledges and explores the client’s emotions, energy shifts, non-verbal cues or other behaviors »
- 🧩 being connected to the energy before, during and after the session
- evokes awareness
- « Invites the client to share more about their experience in the moment »
- 🧩 after the anacrusis card, asking : What is here for you?
- facilitates client’s growth
- « Works with the client to integrate new awareness, insight or learning into their worldview and behaviors »
- 🧩 during and at the end of the session, pause and support your client to reflect on their learnings and action plan. Sometimes as easy as picking a card and having an anacrusis moment!

What are your experiences for:
- using anacrusis for yourself?
- using anacrusis in a personal environment -relatives, kids-?
- using anacrusis in a professional environment -colleagues, clients, coaches-?
What are you learning from your practice, that might support
- you?
- your individual coaches?
- the teams you coach -if relevant-?
